Nigeria – 169 dead, 191 hospitalized in cholera outbreak

The death toll from the cholera outbreak that struck 41 of 44 local government areas in Kano State has risen to 169.

Dr. Ashiru Rajab, director of the Kano State Department of Public Health, who confirmed this in an interview with reporters, said these deaths have been reported over the past three months in the state.

Dr. Rajab said that about 191 victims are currently being treated at various medical facilities in the state. The director was also quick to state that the government is working tirelessly to stop and resolve the situation.

According to him, “In the last three months, we have recorded 5,221 cases of the disease. About 4,860 have been treated and discharged. We currently have 191 active cases in various facilities across the state, while 169 deaths have been reported in 41 local government areas of the state.

“The Kano State government has launched a massive campaign to inform and educate the public, especially rural residents, on the measures needed to maintain environmental and personal hygiene to avoid outbreaks.

“In addition, the government has provided necessary medicines such as solutions, medicines and other necessary supplies in the state hospitals aimed at combating this menace,” Dr. Rajab said.
