On the island of Palma, lava from a volcanic eruption reached the ocean

The lava of a volcano erupting for the tenth day on the Spanish island of Palma (Canary Islands) has reached the ocean, emergency services of the Canary Islands said.

“The lava has already reached the sea,” the service said on Twitter.

The Canary Islands are washed by the Atlantic Ocean, but in Spain the word “sea” is also used to refer to the ocean.

“Contact of lava with the sea can provoke explosions and the release of gases that are harmful to health. If you are in an isolated area of Tazacorte, the safest place is your home,” – said in the message. Experts also warn that if a person is on the street, then it is necessary to find a “refuge”.

The volcanic eruption on the island of Palma began on September 19. Earlier, the National Geographic Institute of Spain recorded an increase in seismic activity. To date, lava has destroyed about 700 buildings. About 6 thousand residents of Palma have been evacuated, residents of several more coastal areas must remain at home.
