Polar cold wave hits South American countries

“The polar cold wave” of the first half of the week in the south-central region of Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will bring the largest negative cold anomaly in the world outside the poles. Nowhere on the planet will temperatures be as below average outside the polar regions as in central South America.

It snowed today in Santa Catarina, on the southern Santa Catarina Plateau, and freezing rain fell in San Jose dos Aucentes (MS) and Pato Branco, southwest of Parana.

Today in Argentina, minimum temperatures reached -15.0ºC in Maquinchao, -11.7ºC in Malargüe, -10.6ºC in Uspallat, -9.9ºC in La Chiaca, -9ºC in Eskel and -8.6ºC in Perito Moreno. Yesterday it snowed in places that are little accustomed to this phenomenon, in the northwest of Buenos Aires province and in the south of Santa Fe province.

What draws attention in the global temperature anomaly satellite data today is how warm it is in the Northwest United States and in the British Columbia region of Canada. Yesterday Canada recorded its highest temperature ever, 46ºC in British Columbia.

Similarly, the map shows which areas of Antarctica are colder than average. While the Arctic is 0.5ºC above average, Antarctica is 3.2ºC below average. This contributes to the fact that the temperature in the Northern Hemisphere is 0.5ºC above average, while the Southern Hemisphere now registers a temperature of 0.5ºC below average.
