Powerful typhoon hits Hong Kong

One worker died and three others were rescued by rescuers after huge scaffolding around a high-rise apartment building in Hong Kong collapsed Friday morning under an onslaught of heavy rain and strong winds brought by a typhoon.

Police said two women working at a construction site at the Beverly Hill complex on Broadwood Road in Happy Valley were found at the scene, one was pulled unconscious from under the rubble and the other was unhurt.

The injured woman died at Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai at about 12:45 p.m. Two drivers were rescued from their vehicles after the scaffolding collapsed onto the road below.

Heavy rains forced the Hong Kong Observatory to raise the 11:45 a.m. flash flood warning to black level, the highest level last declared on June 28.
