Three people died in flash floods in the department of Solola, Guatemala, according to the country’s emergency services.
The disaster occurred after heavy rains caused the Kiba River to overflow in the village of Guineles, municipality of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan in the department of Solola. Three people, including two children, were swept away by the torrents of water. About 30 houses were seriously damaged and 85 people moved to shelters.
Several settlements in the municipality were isolated after the flooding damaged roads and bridges. According to media reports, at least 15,000 people in the municipality were affected.
Meanwhile, heavy rains have caused floods and landslides in other departments of the country since June 12, 2021. A landslide in Amatitlán in the department of Guatemala blocked a road, disrupting the movement of thousands of people. In the department of Alta Verapaz, flooding damaged buildings in San Cristobal Verapaz, displacing 25 people.
