Record rain causes flooding in Morgantown, West Virginia, USA

Heavy rain not only caused flooding of roads and basements, but also set a new record for the amount of rain recorded at the Morgantown Airport.

“It was very heavy and very localized,” Chris Leonardi, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, said of Sunday’s storm.

A gauge at the Morgantown airport recorded 1.92 inches of precipitation, surpassing the previous record of 1.42 inches in 1951, Leonardi said.

Sensors in eastern Monongalia County and Preston County recorded up to 5 inches of precipitation, he said.
