Severe floods hit the city of Imperatrices in Brazil

Another day of heavy rains began at dawn on Monday in Imperatris, causing the water level in the Tocantins River to rise 3 meters above normal, causing multiple floods in many areas of the city.

According to the city’s Department of Civil Defense and Protection Imperatrix, 120 mm of rain fell in just 13 hours, the equivalent of two months’ worth of rainfall in the entire city. The municipality of Bakuri, in the far north of Maranhão state, was also affected by heavy rains that caused flooding due to the overflow of the Bakuri River.

According to Civil Defense experts, more than 500 families were affected by the flooding. The notice says that rain of more than 100 millimeters of rain per hour is expected, according to the forecast, starting Tuesday.
