Suwanosejima eruption, volcanic alert level raised to 3, Japan

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has raised the volcanic alert level for the Suwanosejima volcano.

Authorities are urging residents of the village of Toshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, to refrain from visiting the danger zone.

The decision to change the alert level was made after an eruption in the Mount Otake crater around 17:00 UTC. The eruption threw large rocks hundreds of meters away from the volcano.

Several first eruptions were recorded in the crater, JMA said, and warned residents that large rocks could affect an area within a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) radius of the crater.
