Recent events in the world – such as a series of hurricanes in North America or powerful magnetic storms – suggest many to the idea of the imminent end of the world. Many scientists also take seriously these threats and have already calculated the scenarios of a possible Apocalypse.
Scientists from the University of Wisconsin published an article on the university’s website a few days ago stating that Mars could collide with the Earth. Astrophysicists predict that the collision may occur in a few billion years, when the orbits of the planets are strongly displaced and intersected under the influence of the attraction of Mars.
The hypothesis of a collision of the Earth with another large space object is not new. A number of specialists believe that the Moon could have formed as a result of a collision between the Earth and the planet Teia. Recent studies have shown that as a result of this event, two moons could arise at once, the smaller of which subsequently collided with a larger one.
This threat remains relevant even now. Recently, the media referring to scientists reported a strange planet with a V-shaped plume of particles. It is expected that a deadly Earth collision with this object can occur in a few hundred years. Despite some skepticism of scientists towards such news (the reliability of which, in their opinion, is comparable with the reports about the planet Nibiru), not all astronomers exclude such an opportunity.
Much more seriously, scientists perceive the danger of falling to Earth near-Earth objects, for example, an asteroid, similar to that that fell 65 million years ago, destroying all dinosaurs. This event can lead to catastrophic consequences for all mankind. Even a small fragment of a dwarf planet can raise a huge amount of dust, which for several months will hide from the Earth’s sun. Such “twilight” will lead to serious climatic consequences.
“All substances of powdery consistency will rise up into the atmosphere and heat up, as if you switched on the oven,” says Michael Rampio, a space explorer from New York University.
As a result, the air temperature on the Earth will drop sharply, which will cause a massive death of plants. In turn, this will provoke a decrease in the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. All these factors together will likely lead to the death of people and many other species.
Death under the Sun.
Another threat has recently become more tangible. Last week there were at least five major explosions on the Sun, which provoked magnetic storms on Earth. Because of the outbreak in Europe and the USA, radio was cut off in the high-frequency range, navigation problems arose over an hour due to communication failure.
“Flashes on the Sun are not just cosmic, but real earthly problems. Our world is now closely connected with satellites that are in space, so that on Earth, all communication can easily disappear, for example. This is a threat to the astronauts who are near and, of course, geomagnetic storms negatively affect sick people, “the researcher stressed.
The largest flash on the Sun is the “Carrington event” (named after the scientist who fixed it) in 1859. The magnetic storm that followed the outbreak, caused a breakdown of electrical grids around the world and fires. Such events occur in our day: the outbreak in the sun in 1989 left six million inhabitants of Canada without electricity.
According to the deputy director of the space weather department of the White House’s Directorate of the White House Bill Marteg, in the case of a super-powerful outbreak of people, the same consequences as for the fall of an asteroid are expected: hundreds of electric transformers would be destroyed, large areas on all continents “would be plunged into darkness for weeks and months. ”
A new storm is expected already in 2022, the probability of this event is at least 12%. to save the power network quickly does not work: modern devices fix the outbreak about half an hour before its consequences reach the Earth.
A new threat.
If a possible fall of the asteroid or the dangers of outbreaks on the Sun has been known for a long time, a new threat – the eruption of a super volcano – came to the attention of scientists relatively recently, after studying the activity of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, which is located in the homonymous national park in the northwest of the United States. His last eruption occurred 640,000 years ago. Then a layer of asphyxiating ash covered the whole of North America, and the climate on Earth changed dramatically.
A catastrophe of an even larger scale occurred 73,000 years ago at Lake Toba on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Almost three thousand cubic kilometers of ash were thrown into the air. Sulfuric acid rain fell on the Earth for six years, and the planet was covered with dust clouds that permanently closed the Sun. The event almost led to the death of a man who appeared a short time before this modern kind.
Besides Toba and Yellowstone, super-volcanoes exist in New Zealand and a number of other places. All of them are currently inactive. Eruptions of these objects occur quite often – about once in 100 thousand years, which makes this threat the most probable of all of the above. The consequences will be similar: falling of ash in the atmosphere will sharply reduce the temperature on the Earth (by about 10 degrees), which will lead to the destruction of the crop, the year and other consequences. To estimate the possible scale of the disaster, it is enough to remember the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyyafyadlayekudl. Natural cataclysm violated air traffic in most of Europe and some African regions, which led to millions of losses. At the same time, Eyyafyadlayekudl is not comparable in power with any of the super volcanoes.
To prevent such events, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) proposed to cool the magma bubble, which lies at a depth of 8 km and is in fact a time bomb that could explode at any time. The bubble will be pumped cold water under high pressure. This will allow the bubble to cool by 35%, and also to heat the water, which will then be supplied to the geothermal station. The cost of electricity will be 10 cents per kilowatt-hour. Experts, however, do not exclude that the drilling of the channel, through which water will be pumped, will provoke the eruption of Yellowstone.

The death of mankind will not necessarily occur as a result of some kind of natural cataclysm, the famous British scientist Stephen Hawking is sure. He proposed a very pessimistic scenario of the fate of earthlings in case they do not prevent global warming. According to him, in the near future due to human activities the temperature on our planet will reach several hundred degrees Celsius, the oceans will begin to boil, and from the sky will fall acid rain. The earth will turn into a new Venus (the temperature on its surface is 464 degrees Celsius).
The physicist expressed similar thoughts even earlier. In the documentary film “New Earth Expedition,” he urged humanity to leave the planet for a thousand years.
“Although the probability of a catastrophe on planet Earth this year may be quite low, it develops over time and becomes almost one hundred percent in the next 1,000 or 10,000 years. By this time we must move to other stars, so the catastrophe on Earth will not mean the end of the human race, “the physicist stressed.
