Thunderstorms and torrential hail hit the popular tourist island of Crete on Tuesday as a storm swept through southern Greece in the early morning hours.
The inhabitants of Heraklion and Chania, the largest cities of the island, woke up after midnight to the sound of the pouring rain.
Greek media showed images of the island’s main motorway, covered in a thick layer of hail, and workers raking hail from the streets of the coastal town of Malia.
Police did not report serious damage from the hurricane.
