U.S.: Lightning strike kills lifeguard, injures seven in Jersey

A young lifeguard was killed and seven people, including three other lifeguards, were injured when lightning struck a beach on the Jersey shore Monday afternoon, authorities said.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy confirmed that a lifeguard from Berkeley Township died this afternoon.

This is the second death of a young lifeguard on the Jersey shore in the last week.

Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardi said the others were taken to hospitals with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Amato said his town’s beaches will be closed Tuesday through Thursday while beach personnel and lifeguards are assisted by crisis counselors. Four of the victims were lifeguards and four others were beachgoers.

“This is a tragic and heartbreaking day for our city and the entire Jersey Shore,” Amato said in a statement. “This young man was protecting the lives of others every day. Our lifeguard teams, like many others on the coast, make a special connection to our community over the summer, which makes this loss all the more difficult.”
