Unprecedented snowfall hits Argentina

Heavy snowfall took residents of several interior areas of Argentina by surprise this week, including the city of Cordoba, which was covered in snow for the first time in 14 years.

An incredibly rare snowfall that has been observed only a few times in the last 100+ years (in 2007, 1975, 1955, 1920, 1918 and 1912 – years that ALL correlate with solar minimums/long periods of reduced solar activity).

Argentina’s National Meteorological Service reported that the snowfall was not limited to the province of Cordoba, but other provinces such as Mendoza, San Luis and the highlands of San Juan, La Rioja and Catamarca also experienced historic snowfall.

On days of heavy snowfall, authorities ask people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Officially, winter will not begin in Argentina until Monday, June 21, but the country’s Meteorological Service warns of low temperatures throughout the week – at least until next Friday – ranging from -2C to 5C.

The snowfalls are indeed accompanied by chilling cold, with negative readings recorded in 18 localities. Leading the ranking was El Amago with -2.8C, followed by Estancia Grande with -2C.

Unusual for the early season, the cold has encompassed all of Buenos Aires, including the metropolitan area.

“The city hasn’t had such low temperatures since 2013,” said local meteorologist Fernandez.
