USA: State of emergency declared in Washington state due to record snowfall

The city of Leavenworth declared a state of emergency Jan. 7 and requested assistance from the National Guard. City officials said up to 48 inches of snow fell in less than 48 hours in some areas, calling it “an unprecedented and record snowfall.”

Authorities are concerned about the pressure of snow on homes and buildings.

“Declaring an emergency allows the city to use local resources that can provide assistance quickly instead of going through the normal bidding process, and is a prerequisite for state and federal emergency funding,” said a city official.

Assistance requested from the National Guard includes welfare checks for residents, food deliveries, snow removal and snow clearing of private driveways. The city is also working with local contractors to provide emergency assistance, including snow removal and storage.
