Volcanic eruption in Iceland: lava flows over an area of 15 hectares

Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, professor of geophysics, estimates that the lava escaping from the Geldingadalur crater in Fagradalsfjall covered about 15 hectares this afternoon.

The Civil Defense has warned against approaching the crater in Geldingadalur due to gas pollution.

Today’s morning measurements show that gas pollution has reached a dangerous level and it is now very dangerous to approach the eruption. Therefore, the area around the eruption site is closed, and people are asked to comply with this prohibition.
