Volcanic gas and ash release at Pagan Volcano, Mariana Islands

On September 1, volcanic gas and ash emissions were noted, prompting the NMI/GNSS to raise the aviation color code to orange and the volcano alert level to an observation level. The previous eruption of this volcano occurred in 2012 (VEI 2).

A continuous plume from the summit spread up to 150 km (93 miles) northwest and southwest of the volcano at 3 km (10,000 ft) above sea level for most of the day.
