Volcano erupts on Manam Island in Papua New Guinea

A volcano on Manam Island had been quiet for the past two months, but suddenly went into action, spewing thick smoke, plume, lava and fire.

Manam Island Seventh District Dugulaw Councilman Paul Maburau said the eruption happened around 10 p.m., and island residents who had returned there from a care center in Bogia were frightened and constantly calling for help.

Maburau, who is in Bogia, said he wrote to Madang Governor Peter Yama and Bogia MP Robert Naguri about the situation on the island, and Naguri responded that help would be given to the people.

“Our MP said he would arrange to get fuel for our people to a safe area and we would move them if there was a major eruption,” he said.
