A unique biobank for Russia, where it is planned to collect samples of all the species diversity of the Pacific Ocean, opens at the National Marine Biology Research Center of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Vladivostok, RIA Novosti representative of the Primorsky Oceanarium Tatyana Gnezdilova said.
“Center Biobank” is a state-of-the-art cryo-storage facility, which allows storing bio-samples at any temperature, researching the genome of marine mammals and other biological species, including those that are on the verge of extinction, “Gnezdilova said.
She noted that the biobank will open on May 16. On this day, an open seminar will be held, which will show automated sample storage systems and a scanning probe microscope, with which you can get a digital three-dimensional image of a living cell. Leading Russian scientists and teachers will take part in the seminar.
“While in the biobank a few samples, but in plans – to collect all the species diversity of the Pacific, the minimum – the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk.” The highest rate scientists make on the Red Book species, “- added the agency interlocutor.
The National Scientific Center for Marine Biology, based on the Far Eastern Branch of the RAS, was created by a government decision. The Center includes the Institute of Marine Biology named after Zhirmunsky FEB RAS, the scientific and educational complex Primorsky Oceanarium FEB RAS and the Far Eastern Marine Biosphere State Nature Reserve FEB RAS.
