Archaeologists of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences have made an amazing discovery on the territory of ancient Chersonesos. During the field expedition the scientists discovered a unique stone construction, which combines a public building and a mausoleum.

The discovered building is located on the west side of the ancient street, which lies on the territory of the city necropolis from the gates of Chersonesos. According to archeologists, the burial complex may contain the remains of buried aristocrats or noblemen.

The uniqueness of this ritual building is that it combines two functions: a public building and a mausoleum. This combination of elements makes the discovered ritual complex unique not only for Chersonesos and Bosporan kingdom, but for the whole ancient world.

The researches on the territory of the ancient Chersonesos have been conducted for many years. The total area of explorations exceeds 83 thousand square meters. The historical cultural layer over 9 meters thick includes deposits from the Hellenistic era to the modern ages. Chersonesos was founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC and is one of the oldest cities on the territory of Crimea. In ancient times it was one of the largest trading centers of the Black Sea and was of great importance to the Greek culture.

Despite the fact that Chersonesos was destroyed during the invasion of the Huns in the 5th century its ruins have survived until today and are a unique object for the study of the history of the ancient world.
