Dragons live here

On old maps you can find indications of places signed – “here live dragons”, which is a warning of the immeasurable dangers that await those who dare to penetrate there. There are few old globes and maps on which these “Lands of Dragons” are found.

The marking “Dragons Live Here” can be found on the Hunt-Lenox Globe, the third oldest known globe, dating from about 1508. Along the east coast of Asia, it bears the words “Hic Sunt Dracones,” which is Latin for “Dragons Live Here.”

This was thought to be the only known use of the phrase, but the same inscription was also found on an ostrich egg globe, a mysterious object made about 1504 from the joined lower halves of two ostrich eggs. Above the coast of Southeast Asia the inscription-“Hic Sunt Dracones.
