Genetics created the most useful grapes

Specialists from the Far Eastern Federal University and FEB RAS were able to make so that Amur grape cells produce more useful biologically active substance.

Created by scientists, gene constructs increase the synthesis of resveratrol in the culture of grape cells three to eight times. This potent antioxidant has a beneficial effect on the human body, has anti-carcinogenic properties and protects the cardiovascular system.

In addition, transgenic varieties with a high content of resveratrol better cope with stress and fungal diseases, which is important for agricultural practice.

The results of a study published in the journal Plant Cell Tissue and Organ Culture may be the first step towards obtaining valuable biologically active substances from the mass of vine cells cultured in test tubes.
