German study shows zero mortality from COVID among healthy children ages 5-11

A recent study in Germany showed that no healthy children aged 5-11 years died from COVID. For all children, the risk of death is 3 per 1,000,000 if they have no serious comorbidities. The risk of hospitalization is also very low.

A new study from Germany, now in pre-print form, estimates the absolute risk of COVID for children.

The German study provides the following figures for children and COVID in Germany:

– For healthy children, the risk of being hospitalized is 51 per 100,000
– For healthy children, the risk of going to the intensive care unit is 8 per 100,000 people
– For healthy children, the risk of death is 3 per 1,000,000, with no deaths reported in children over 5 years of age.
– Children 5 to 11 years old have a lower risk than children <5 years old and adolescents 12 to 17 years old.
– In children 5 to 11, the risk of ICU admission is 2 per 100,000; there were 0 deaths.
