There are diseases that require organ transplantation immediately because of the huge danger to health, but often such people need to wait for the operation for several months or even years. And then various procedures come to the rescue. For example, with kidney damage, when they can not perform a function, they resort to hemodialysis. This is a very complicated procedure that involves a person to a hospital bed. But scientists from Russia recently managed to create and test an apparatus with the function of an artificial kidney, which is portable and can be carried with itself.
As reported by RIA Novosti news agency, a group of scientists from the Moscow Institute of Electronic Technology (MIET) succeeded in developing an apparatus that requires changing the solution for blood purification no more than twice a day. The fact is that at the moment there are 2 methods of purifying blood: the hemodialysis already mentioned and peritoneal dialysis. In the first case, the blood is purified outside the human body in specialized centers. With peritoneal dialysis, this is done with the help of a special solution, which is placed in the abdominal cavity of the patient. You need to change the solution several times a day. In our country, the first version is more common, which is extremely inconvenient for patients. According to the press service of the university,
“The device created in MIET can be carried with itself, and it carries out purification of blood by the method of peritoneal dialysis with a constant regeneration of the dialysate solution, which will reduce the need for replacing the solution up to once or twice a day. We have already successfully tested the test sample of the apparatus in the laboratory and on the animal model. ”
The scientists plan to demonstrate their achievements in December this year within the framework of the exhibition “Vuzpromexpo-2017”. There will be new details about the device. It is worth noting that this is not the first artificial organ developed in the walls of MIET. Earlier, specialists created an “artificial heart”, which is intended for patients with severe forms of heart failure.
