Insects: surprising facts about little creatures

Insects are some of the most amazing and diverse creatures on the planet. They inhabit every corner of the earth, from the depths of the ocean to the tops of mountain ranges. Some are useful helpers in agriculture, others are dangerous pests, and still others have incredible beauty and amazing abilities.

RT recently interviewed Thomas Miller, a professor of entomology at the University of California, Riverside, who told us about some of the most fascinating and interesting aspects of insect life.

1. Insects are the most numerous animals on Earth

There are over a million known species of insects, making them the most numerous class of animals on Earth. They are also the most diverse class of animals, including more than 150 different orders.

2. Some insects can fly backwards

Some insects, such as flies and bees, can fly backward. This is due to the special structure of their wings, which allows them to change direction in a fraction of a second.

3. insects can see ultraviolet light

Some insects, such as bees and some species of butterflies, can see ultraviolet light. This allows them to detect flowers and other objects that are not visible to the human eye.

4. Some insects can change their appearance

Some insects, such as ladybugs and butterflies, can change their appearance to protect themselves from predators. They may change the color and shape of their bodies to blend in with their surroundings or look more dangerous.

5. Insects can produce sound

Many insects, such as crickets and grasshoppers, can produce sound. They do this by training their wings or other body parts to create vibrations that turn into sound.

6. Insects can be dangerous to humans

Some insects, such as bees and wasps, can be dangerous to humans. They can sting, causing a painful reaction and even allergic shock in some people.

7. Some insects are useful helpers in agriculture

Some insects, such as bees and wasps, play an important role in pollinating plants and helping to increase harvests. Other insects, such as thrush beetles and butterfly whites, help control insect pests and protect plants from damage.

8. Some insects are used in medicine

Some insects are used in medicine to make medicines. For example, a substance obtained from the caterpillars of some species of butterflies is used to treat cancer.

9. Insects can be amazingly beautiful

Some insects, such as monarch butterflies and ladybug beetles, are amazingly beautiful and have bright and intense colors.

10. Insects can help with future food problems

Insects can be an important source of food in the future. They contain high amounts of protein and other nutrients and can be grown on a smaller area than traditional animals.

Insects are amazing creatures that play an important role in nature and may be beneficial to humans. Studying their lives and behavior can help us better understand our planet and its living creatures.
