Monkeypox virus found in human semen

Italian scientists are the first in the world to establish that the monkeypox virus can be contained in seminal fluid, said Francesco Vaia, director general of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani (“Spallanzani”).

“Our researchers are the first in the world to discover that the virus responsible for monkeypox can be present in seminal fluid,” said the head of the famous research center.

In this regard, Vaiya recalled that virologists “even in difficult times said, including to young people, that we can and should live a full life, but subject to safety conditions.”

The official report of the Spallanzani Institute notes that the monkeypox virus “may be present in the seminal fluid of a person infected with this disease in a form capable of reproduction.”

“The virus was isolated in the institute’s laboratories from seminal fluid taken from a patient six days after the onset of fever, and in cell culture was able to infect and multiply in the laboratory,” the researchers point out.

The presence of monkeypox virus was detected in the seminal fluid of six of the seven patients in the clinic of the Institute. Further research is underway related to “the persistence of the virus in semen and other biological materials in order to fully understand the mechanisms of human-to-human transmission of this virus.”

According to Spallanzani experts, their work will help clarify many issues related to the hypothesis of sexual transmission of the monkeypox virus.

According to the latest information from the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox infection has been reported in 29 countries, with more than a thousand such cases already identified. However, no deaths have been recorded so far. According to WHO experts, the danger of the spread of this disease in non-endemic countries is real. Of particular concern is the risk of the virus spreading to vulnerable populations, including children and pregnant women.
