Scientist finds a teddy bear at a depth of 10 kilometers

The toy was not the only amazing find in one of the deepest points in the world.

The depth of Emden is approximately 10,400 meters below sea level. It is located off the coast of Siargao Island in the Philippines, and is the third deepest point on Earth.

“We saw something behind the window [of the underwater vehicle]. At first we saw the eyes and thought it was a creature, but no, it was a teddy bear, ”said microbiologist-oceanologist Deo Onda.

Until March 2021, when Onda and American underwater explorer Viktor Veskovo sank to a depth of 10,045 meters, no one had ever been to Emden Depth. The expedition took 12 hours: four hours were spent on the descent, four hours on research, and four hours on the ascent to the surface.

Apart from the teddy bear, they saw many other things that have no place under water. When he and Veskovo came closer to the western wall of the depression, they saw something white and thought it was a jellyfish. But it was a plastic bag. “We sighed, and then there was a long silence,” Onda recalls. It was the first of many pieces of plastic they found. “Plastic wrap, chip bags, and all that stuff,” the scientist enumerates. Veskovo looked at him and suddenly said: “I’m sorry to tell you, Deo, but this is one of the dirtiest places I’ve ever been.”

“It is our moral duty to make the world in which our children grow up to be the same as in our time,” urges Deo Onda. “The deep sea is part of our heritage and we must protect it.”
