Scientists from the Laboratory of Quantum Optics at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, in collaboration with colleagues from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, have created a microscope that has no resolution limit. The results are published in the journal Optica.
The development of biology and medicine requires more detailed structures and relationships of ultra-small objects, for example, proteins in cells. An ordinary microscope is not enough for this, and with the help of electron microscopes, only inanimate objects can be examined, since the sample must be placed in a vacuum.
The new microscope modification works on the basis of the already known scanning imaging microscope (ISM) method. In this way, the correlations of the intensities detected by several detectors are calculated. In this regard, the measurement of correlations of the nth order increases the resolution by 2n times; accordingly, the new method of microscope operation has no resolution limit.
According to scientists, the new method requires low costs, only a confocal microscope is needed, in which it is necessary to replace the photomultiplier with an array detector.
In this way, a microscope with unprecedented detail can be created, four times the diffraction limit.
