Scientists have warned of the approaching catastrophe on Earth

Scientists from the United States have warned that melting glaciers in Antarctica will call into question the existence of coastal cities such as New York and Shanghai. Writes about this Phys.org.

As the planet’s temperature rises, the Arctic ice begins to melt. It directly affects people’s lives. However, Antarctica is no less dangerous for humanity. There is enough ice in this region to provoke an increase in the level of the World Ocean by 60 meters as a result of global warming, experts say.

“We are already seeing the first signs of this problem,” the article says.

According to the latest research, glacier melting could spiral out of control in just a few decades. At the same time, the reduction of greenhouse gases and technological progress, most likely, will not prevent a catastrophe, scientists say.

At current rates of greenhouse gas emissions, the Antarctic ice sheet will pass the critical melting threshold by about 2060. The rise in the level of the World Ocean will reach such dimensions that will become irreversible in the time scale of human existence. Clearing the Earth’s atmosphere from carbon dioxide by that time will not be able to stop this process, and by 2100 the water level will rise ten times faster than today, experts summed up.
