Scientists warn about the destruction of the “Doomsday” glacier in Antarctica in five years

American scientists at the University of Oregon have found that the Thwaites Glacier, located in West Antarctica, can become unstable and collapse in five years. This is reported in the conclusions announced at the conference of the American Geophysical Society.

Experts believe that the complete collapse of the “Judgment Day” glacier may occur within a specified period of time, and this circumstance will lead to an increase in global sea level by 0.6 m.

The researchers analyzed a portion of the Thwaites Glacier resting on the seabed. The East Ice Shelf supports 1/3 of the Thwaites Glacier itself, and its collapse will cause the land part to slide into the sea. In this connection, the contribution to sea level rise may increase by 25%.

At the same time, recent observations have confirmed that the shelf part is getting weaker and weaker at the bottom of shallow water.

The Thwaites Glacier is one of the fastest changing glaciers in Antarctica. It got its second name due to the fact that it is the fastest moving and most unstable glacier in Antarctica.
