Simulation of the destruction of Chelyabinsk meteorite

NASA presented the most detailed simulation to date of the occurrence of the meteorite “Chelyabinsk” in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The simulation was performed using a Pleiades supercomputer and Cart3D software. On the roller, the asteroid is marked in gray, shock waves – orange, yellow and red. Black indicates destructible fragments of the object.

Meteorite “Chelyabinsk” is a fragment of the asteroid, which on February 15, 2013 at approximately 07:10 Moscow time entered the Earth’s atmosphere. The cosmic body exploded in the atmosphere at an altitude of 50 kilometers, as a result of which many of its fragments fell to the territory of the Chelyabinsk region. The explosion was observed by hundreds of thousands of people in the region and border areas of Kazakhstan. Fragments of the meteorite found in Lake Chebarkul.
