The tallest tropical tree found in Malaysia

The world’s tallest tropical tree discovered by explorers in the rain forests of Malaysia. The height of the trunk of this giant reaches 89,5 meter. Tree – yellow meranti (Shorea faguetiana) – was found in the reserve Malau, known as the “Lost World of Sabah”.

To find a giant tree helped laser scanner, which was installed on the airplane. With its help, scientists obtained three-dimensional image of tropical forest in the framework of the ecological project. Giant tree was 1.2 meters higher than the previous record holder tropical. However, researchers found yellow meranti equal the height of the 115-meter Redwood in Redwood National Park in California.
