Turkey: An ancient underground city was found under an ordinary house

After receiving information that illegal excavations were being conducted in a house in the İscehisar neighborhood of Afyonkarahisar in western Turkey, police raided the house and found that there was an ancient underground city under the house.

Police raided a house in the İscehisar neighborhood of Afyonkarahisar and detained seven people who were illegally excavating, DHA’s Ali Fuat Güçlü reported. It was stated that the suspects had dug a tunnel under the house and discovered an underground city where historical artifacts and columns were found.

Teams from the Contraband and Organized Crime Division of the Afyonkarahisar Police Department determined that illegal excavations were being conducted at a house in Iscehisar to find historical artifacts.

During the investigation of the house, the operatives found that there was a hole about 3 meters in diameter and an ancient tunnel with columns inside. Historical objects such as inscriptions, statues and sarcophagi were found in the tunnel where the columns are located.

During the examination, it was found that the illegally excavated area resembled an underground city in appearance.

In addition, materials such as a large number of punches, picks and shovels were seized during the search of the house. The suspects were taken into custody for trial under the Protection of Cultural and Natural Property Act.
