The outbreak of the coronavirus is out of control, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said at a press conference.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis unlike any crisis in our lives, and this year’s General Assembly session will be unlike any other,” he added.
The Secretary General noted that soon humanity will overcome the milestone of a million lives lost due to the coronavirus, and called the pandemic the “number one threat” to global security.
Many are pinning their hopes on a vaccine, Guterres said, but there is no panacea for the pandemic. He stressed that the vaccine alone will not fix the crisis.
But <...> the vaccine should be seen as a global public good, because COVID-19 knows no boundaries. We need a vaccine that is affordable and accessible to everyone – a vaccine for people, “the secretary general added.
He called for a significant increase in the use of new and existing tools that can help fight the disease and provide life-saving treatment, especially over the next 12 months.
