The survey was made in the active zone of Kilauea volcano by a geologist from the Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory. The geologist uses a stone hammer to tear off the frozen layer from the lava piece and transfer the samples to cold water. Thus, it is possible to avoid further crystallization of lava. As far as the collected samples are hot, one can see by the instant boiling of water in a bucket. The temperature of the lava is about 1400 degrees Celsius, and it can easily burn the skin of a volcanologist even at a distance at which he takes samples.
