Sunspot AR2871 exploded on Sept. 23 (0442 UT), causing a massive M3-class solar flare. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded an extreme ultraviolet flare.
Type II and IV solar radio bursts immediately after the flare suggest that there was also a coronal mass ejection. If so, it is probably headed almost directly toward Earth.
