A meteorite exploded in the sky over Peru

A meteorite exploded over Peru around 01:00 UTC on April 16, 2020. The American Meteorite Society (AMS) received two reports from eyewitnesses in the Callao and Ica regions. Visual reports show that the meteorite has disintegrated and may have fallen into the sea.

According to local media reports, dozens of witnesses in Lima and Ica described the fireball as a turquoise red-hot object with a luminous trail.

Although AMS received only one video about this event, the EXOSS Citizen Science project published a selection of shots taken by various security cameras.

In one of the videos, a meteorite explosion and fragmentation were visible. Visual reports show that the meteorite has disintegrated and may have fallen into the sea.

“I just saw a flash of light falling from the sky,” one of the residents wrote on social networks. This caused a lot of feedback from local residents who also witnessed this event.

“We also saw him with my parents at 20:00 LT. It was a huge green light with a green tail of red and orange,” one of them replied.

“In Ica, it was huge! It fell towards the sea. It was very large and had different colors,” said another observer.
