Falling meteorite observed in the skies over Salamanca and Avila, Spain

SMART detectors from the Andalusian Institute of Astrophysics (IAA-CSIC), working as part of the Southwest European Bolides and Meteors Network, recorded a fireball over Salamanca and Avila, formed by the entrance into the atmosphere of a rock that separated from an asteroid.

This fireball was recorded by Project SMART detectors installed at various observatories on the Peninsula. The SMART project is coordinated by the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC).

As José María Madiedo, an astrophysicist, reported via social media, the phenomenon occurred around 0100 hours.
