In the coming decades, 1 million dangerous asteroids will approach the Earth

The meteorite that exploded in the sky above Chelyabinsk in 2013 was no more than 20 meters in diameter. But the energy of the explosion was enough to damage thousands of buildings and injure more than 1,500 people.

This event showed that small asteroids cannot be ignored, and there could be many such “Chelyabinsk” incidents in the next 100 years.

According to calculations by Chinese astronomers who shared their new findings in the journal Acta Astronomica Sinica, in the next hundred years, asteroids as small as 100 meters may threaten to fall to Earth more than 700 times.

Moreover, simulations have shown that there could be many more threatening asteroids to Earth, from 100,000 to a million. Until now, when tracking dangerous to Earth asteroids objects smaller than 100 meters in diameter were simply ignored.

Asteroids such as Chelyabinsk are extremely difficult to catch also for the reason that they come from the side of the Sun, where it is impossible to direct ordinary telescopes.

In recent years, the Chinese authorities have allocated substantial funds for the development of planetary defense solutions. This is done not only to reduce the asteroid danger, but also in anticipation of a tougher confrontation in space with the United States.

China has made no secret of the fact that the asteroid tracking system will be integrated into the military defense system and become part of the national security strategy.
