The Sun threw a M1.9-class flare toward Earth

Sunspot AR2908, pointed directly toward Earth, produced an M1.9-class solar flare on December 20. The pulse of X-rays ionized Earth’s upper atmosphere, causing shortwave radio communications over the South Atlantic Ocean to shut down.

NOAA forecasters expect a glancing blow to the Earth’s magnetic field on Dec. 23, which could cause a geomagnetic storm.
